Curriculum

Our mission at St Thomas a Becket is to invite, encourage, guide and support our pupils in being:  “fully awake, fully human and fully alive”.

 

Our curriculum therefore is designed to be broad and balanced, to meet the needs of every pupil and all groups of pupils, to prepare pupils for the unknown opportunities and challenges of their future and to promote their spiritual, moral, cultural, mental, emotional and physical development.

We operate a 2 week timetable and all students have 50 x 1 hour lessons each fortnight.

Year 7

Each fortnight Year 7 students study 5 hours of RE, 6 hours of Maths, 6 hours of English, 6 hours of Science, 4 hours of History, 4 hours of Geography, 4 hours of French or Spanish, 4 hours of PE, 3 hours of Design and Technology, 2 hours of ICT, 2 hours of Drama, 2 hours of Music and 2 hours of Art. PSHE and Reading for Pleasure are delivered on a rolling programme throughout the year.

Students are set in Maths but are mixed ability in all other subjects.

Year 8

Each fortnight Year 8 students study 5 hours of RE, 6 hours of Maths, 6 hours of English, 6 hours of Science, 4 hours of History, 4 hours of Geography, 4 hours of French or Spanish, 4 hours of PE, 3 hours of Design and Technology, 2 hours of ICT, 2 hours of Drama, 2 hours of Music and 2 hours of Art. PSHE and Reading for Pleasure are delivered on a rolling programme throughout the year.

Students are set in Maths but are mixed ability in all other subjects.

Pupils opt at the end of Year 8 for the courses that they would like to study at GCSE level.

 

Year 9

Much of this year is used as an exploratory, skill building and enrichment experience within all subjects. Teaching of the GCSE courses begins towards the end of Year 9.

Each fortnight Year 9 students study 5 hours of RE, 7 hours of Maths, 6 hours of English, 6 hours of Science, 1 hour of PE, 1 hour of Literacy and Numeracy in PE, 1 hour of Latin, 1 hour of Reading, 1 hour of Life Skills and 1 hour of PSHE. In addition, pupils study 5 hours in each of their 4 option subjects. Option courses include:
